Location, location, location – where to put porta loos at your event

“Where are the toilets?” probably ranks right up there with “Where’s the bar” as one of the top most frequently asked questions at an event. So if you’re planning an event and have made the (wise) decision to hire portable toilets, where you place them is very important for the overall smooth-running of the event and comfort of your guests.

Here are the key things to consider when deciding where to place the portable toilets while planning the layout of your event:

Think big (or small)

The bigger the event, the more portable toilet stations you’ll need. When choosing the preferred locations, try to ensure that there’s equal access for guests from all key gathering areas. There is nothing worse than having to embark on a long trek across the entire length of the venue to find a toilet.

Divide the event area up into sections, and consider providing toilets for each section. Smaller events will require fewer toilets, so you’ll need to then decide on the most central, easy-to-access area that would be suitable for the portable toilets.

Be discreet

No one wants to have everyone at an event watch them go into a toilet trailer or single porta loo. You’ll want to consider having portable loos placed in discreet locations that are easy to find, but also offer a degree of privacy. If the venue doesn’t really allow for discreet placement around a corner, you may want to consider putting up some canvas walls or portable room dividers to offer your guests more privacy.

Proximity to food and seating areas

For the sake of convenience, porta loos should be placed close to areas where food and drinks are available as well as near main seating areas. While they should be close by, they should still be very discreet – and preferably out of plain sight. Use clear signage to indicate where the toilets are.

Consider the limitations

While we will always do our best to accommodate your wishes for the placement of portable toilets and trailers at your event, there are certain physical limitations that have to be considered. For example, porta loos need to be placed on dry, level ground for safety and usability.

In addition, it’s important to make sure the toilets can be easily accessed by a maintenance truck for servicing and pumping to ensure proper sanitation – especially over multi-day events. Certain units may also require access to plumbing or power connections. Discuss all the requirements upfront and try to allow for a site recce so your supplier can give you expert guidance when planning your event layout.

Accessibility for disabled guests

Ensuring all guests have equal access to ablution facilities is essential. Porta loos for the disabled or those in wheelchairs must be clearly signposted and the route to them must be wheelchair friendly. The Fancy Flush Paraplegic Unit is lowered and offers easy access up a collapsible ramp from the back of the unit. These units are larger than average porta loos, and do require more space.
